LODGE NEWS

Hurricane Ivan has caused some heartache for W. Bro. Bell’s family. His in-laws were just allowed to tour their neighborhood in Perdido Key, Florida by bus and their house is intact amongst almost total devastation. Their boat is upside down and the road is gone but they are ok and the house doesn’t appear to be a total loss. Mrs. Thelma Kueck had minor damage to her carport fiber glass panels in Bay St. Louis. Bro. Nolan Pansano, Pearlington Miss., reports that he rode out the storm and everything there is OK also, just lots of branches and debris. Any one having anything else to report please call.

The second of our two Tulane students was raised on September 22. Mark Steven Dorsey II is also an Army cadet. He is eager to get started in his Masonic career and is good friends with Bro. Chase Cockrell who was raised in June. Bro. Dorsey spent the summer in Northern Italy working at a winery and traveling Northern Italy (working?). Welcome my brother. Both Chase and Mark are 20 years old and are looking at very long Masonic carriers.

The Cup of Fraternal Assistance was collected for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund at the last meeting. As soon as we hear about damage to the many lodges, Consistory Building and Shrine Center in the devastated area we will also make a collection for them. If anybody wants to send in a private donation feel free.

The Deutsches Haus has always been very helpful to us in our Germanfest. For the month of October, every Friday and Saturday night up to Oct 23 they celebrate the biggest Oktoberfest in the city. Proceeds keep the Haus in the black for the rest of the year. If you want to have a good time and enjoy the spirit come to the Haus on one of these nights. Sixteen German beers and authentic German food and wine are served. I will be working on the 1st, 15th and 23rd.

Klaus J. Kueck P.M. Secy.

A LETTER FROM BRO. DIETER METZHEIMER (our visitor last month from Hamburg Germany )

3. September 2004

Dear Joe,

Thanks for all hospitality, showing me Masonic tradition in New Orleans and what remains from ancient Germany inside USA , especially inside “Deutsches Haus”. My daughter Eva and myself enjoyed French Quarter and the Jazz music. We were very surprised about Masonic grave yard. Something like this does not exist in Germany .

We enjoyed the friendly atmosphere in the “Deutsches Haus” and, of course, myself the brotherly welcome in your lodge “ Germania ”. I am grateful having seen the Scottish rite initiation to the First Degree of the Masonry. Some years ago I have seen it in Glasgow ( Scotland ) and it impressed me that time already.

As you know, I went tree times to the library and discovered some interesting German books. What interested me most was the mason magazine “Triangel”

written in German language. I could read there even about problems in the Free-masonry in Germany that time, which are to-day still actual.

We spent the days till 29 th August, the day we returned to Germany , in New York-Manhattan, we slept in an Holiday Inn Hasbrooks Heights , a little bit outside.

We met an old friend and his family. And of course, myself went to the Masonic House inside Mahattan, a brother guided us through all luxurious rooms, at least ten with different names, Corinthian or Doric room for example. What interested me most was again the library. I found there the “Triangle” also and I discovered that it was issued during 25 years only between 1854 and 1879. During that time till 1933 was issued another German Masonic magazin: “Der Führer”. You will be surprised ? But this was far before the Austrian Hitler was born 1889, who started the 2. world war to destroy Europe .

1848 after the German revolution was over, many Germans left Germany and between 60 and 80 German speaking lodges were established inside USA in the second part of the 19 th century, now two in New York are left. I was told that the 2 “ Germania ” lodges in New York don’t exist anymore. About 20 English speaking lodges still exist in the 9 th District of New York who are of German origin: “Beethoven”, “Lessing”, “Schiller”, “von Mensch” etc.

It was very warm/hot during the second week in N.O., New York was nice and warm that way. Finally, Eva and myself catched a heavy cold from all this aerconditoners, we are not accustomed to. Now is nice weather in Hamburg , too.

We enjoy it, but I am very busy in the office again and concerning my own lodge

“Zum Gral”. “Gral” means a holy glass, which becomes fulfilled with the holy spirit every year, referring to an very old tale. Richard Wagner composed an opera “Parsival” from this tale in the 19 th century. Our lodge was established in the year 1913, the 100. birthday of Richard Wagner. We are one of 14 lodges in our house.

The 14 lodges are the owners of this beautiful Masonic house, it was build in 1909 and it was not destroyed during the last world war. You can see it in Internet:

www.Freimaurerorden.org – Regionalseiten – Hamburg – „Eintracht an der Elbe“.

Their homepage shows the house.

Greetings to your wife, as well

Dieter K.

Further reflection on the Summer Olympics

Here are the top ten (real!) comments made by NBC sports commentators during the Summer Olympics that they would like to take back:
1. Weightlifting commentator: "This is Gregoriava from Bulgaria. I saw her snatch this morning during her warm up and it was amazing."
2. Dressage commentator: "This is really a lovely horse and I speak from personal experience since I once mounted her mother."
3. Paul Hamm, Gymnast: "I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father."
4. Boxing Analyst: "Sure there have been injuries, and even some deaths in boxing, but none of them really that serious."
5. Softball announcer: "If history repeats itself, I should think we can expect the same thing again."
6. Basketball analyst: "He dribbles a lot and the opposition doesn't like it. In fact you can see it all over their faces."
7. At the rowing medal ceremony: "Ah, isn't that nice, the wife of the IOC president is hugging the cox of the British crew."
8. Soccer commentator: "Julian Dicks is everywhere. It's like they've got eleven Dicks on the field."
9. Tennis commentator: "One of the reasons Andy is playing so well is that, before the final round, his wife takes out his balls and kisses them... Oh my God, what have I just said?"
10.  Diving commentator: "Look at that... you aren't getting anything between those legs."
